Staff and Volunteers
CYCLE Kids began in 2004 when Julie became aware of the alarming numbers of children developing type II diabetes. As an avid cyclist from a very young age, Julie’s vision for CYCLE Kids developed from her desire to share her passion for cycling with children in order to curb childhood obesity and the decline in the health and fitness of children. Cycling is a passion for Julie and it has helped her physically, emotionally, and mentally throughout her life. Thus, Julie wanted to extend what the bike has given to her all these years to today's children. With over 20 years of corporate experience, she quit the business world to devote herself to educating and engaging children in physical activity through CYCLE Kids.
Julie holds a position at Boston University as a visiting scholar, is a frequent lecturer at Harvard College, and was a 2013 recipient of the President's Council on Fitness Sports, and Nutrition Community Leadership award.
Susan Brecker is a psychotherapist, and widow of jazz saxophonist and 15-time Grammy winner Michael Brecker. In 2005, she suspended her work when her husband was diagnosed with MDS, a form of leukemia. She held donor drives around the world, most notably at the Red Sea, Monterey and Newport Jazz Festivals. A match for Michael was never found, and he passed away in January, 2007. In 2011, Susan produced an award-winning documentary film based on her husband entitled More to Live For. The film was taken to film festivals around the world, testing people for the bone marrow registry at every screening. To date, 87 matches have been found from those drives, and the list grows daily. In 2015 and 2017 Susan produced The Nearness of You Concert in honor of her husband, and raised funds for cancer research the Columbia University Medical Center.
Jessi is a RD and Nutrition Curriculum Writer. Jessi started working with CYCLE Kids back in 2008 when she was still a student at Boston University and received a grant to help develop the nutrition curriculum for the CYCLE Kids program. Jessi is thrilled to be working with CYCLE Kids to further develop our curriculum and be a part of a unique and fun educational program that teaches children how to make healthy choices for both nutrition and exercise. A food and fitness expert, Jessi runs her own health and wellness business where she helps clients reach their wellness goals through whole foods, movement, and meditation (www.JessiHaggerty.com).
Evelyn Stevens is the Director of Outreach for CYCLE Kids. Her passion for biking and children made CYCLE Kids a perfect fit for her energy and desire to make a difference in the lives of children. Evelyn is working to connect CYCLE Kids with other passionate people who also understand the power of the bike and the mission of CYCLE Kids, and can help us grow and expand to reach more children. In her own words, "Biking changed my life, I not only found a new profession, I discovered a whole new world filled with joy, happiness, and health. I believe every child should have the opportunity to learn about the powers of the bike, and a fit and active lifestyle. I am excited to work with CYCLE Kids in their mission to change the lives of children through the bike."

Sarah is a recent graduate of Boston University with a degree in Nutrition and Public Health where she was also a Pole Vaulter on the BU Women’s Track and Field team, and is also a Certified Personal Trainer. Sarah stared working with CYCLE Kids in 2015, and now manages the Social Media for the organization. Nutrition and exercise have always played a huge role in Sarah’s life both physically and mentally. Working with CYCLE Kids is so special because the sustainable and innovative program promotes physical and mental health in children, a huge factor in overall wellness. CYCLE Kids helps children to learn how to properly fuel their bodies while learning how to safety ride a bike, together with their classmates and mentors. CYCLE Kids not only helps children achieve a healthier lifestyle, but their communities as well.
Rachel is the Program Administrator for CYCLE Kids. She is currently enrolled in Boston University’s Sargent College pursuing a bachelor of science in Behavior and Health and is in Boston University School of Public Health’s five-year masters program. Throughout high school, Rachel volunteered in an occupational therapy horseback riding program for children with special needs, so she has seen firsthand the difference exercise and programs can make in a child’s life. Rachel is excited to become more integrated into CYCLE Kids and to help children all over the country utilize the CYCLE Kids curriculum.
Lauren Hall - CYCLE Kids Ambassador
Lauren Hall is an ambassador for CYCLE Kids and a professional cyclist from Vicksburg, MS. She graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biological Sciences, graduated from Le Cordon Bleu with an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts and graduated from Belhaven University with a Masters Degree in Management. Lauren grew up without a bicycle, playing soccer in high school and college, instead. She started riding a bike at the age of 29 and says that no matter your age, learning to ride a bike is fun and liberating.
Prior to becoming a professional cyclist, Lauren worked for five years in child nutrition for Rankin County, Mississippi.
Ted King - CYCLE Kids Ambassador
Ted King grew up blasting around small town New Hampshire with his brother and best friend on a bike -- to school, to the local general store, to friends' houses, riding bikes was a way of growing up. With a love for cycling, Ted turned a college degree in economics to a professional cycling career. He's raced at the sport's highest level in over the past ten years, and while 2015 marks his final year of pro racing, his passion for the bike will keep him as an advocate for years to come.
